Day 5 · Buddhism · July 15, 2026

Nothing holds still.

Anicca (say "uh-nik-uh") is the Buddhist term for the plain fact that conditioned things do not hold still: the coffee cools, the light shifts, the mood that felt unbearable an hour ago has already changed shape. The Dhammapada states it about what is fabricated and put together, not about everything without exception; what is unconditioned is a separate matter entirely. This isn't a feel-good slogan that change is automatically good. It's a diagnosis: clinging to any passing thing as if it would hold still is where the suffering actually starts, not the passing itself. You don't have to travel far to test this. Watch one small, already-changing thing this morning, the steam off a cup, the traffic light, the volume of an argument in your head. Let it finish changing without insisting it stay.

This arrives by email each weekday morning. One cup a day, free.
