Day 81 · Zen · October 28, 2026

The exception.

A story in 101 Zen Stories has the boy who grew up to be the Zen master Ikkyu break his teacher's precious antique cup. He doesn't know what to do, and when he hears footsteps, he holds the pieces behind him. When the teacher arrives, the boy asks why people have to die. The teacher explains that everything has a limited life, and the boy brings out the pieces: then the cup has come to the end of its life too. The book doesn't say whether that got him out of trouble. Everyone agrees with the teacher in general, but keeps a short list of things that don't count. The jacket you're saving may be quietly exempt too, kept out of use because you don't want it to wear out. Wear that jacket today, even if you're only going out for groceries.

This arrives by email each weekday morning. One cup a day, free.
