In a case from The Gateless Gate, Bodhidharma sits facing a wall while a man stands behind him in the snow. My mind won't settle, the man says, so settle it for me. Bodhidharma answers: "If you bring me that mind, I will pacify it for you." The man goes looking, and comes back with a report instead of a mind: "When I search my mind I cannot hold it." Then, Bodhidharma says, it's settled already. The worry you woke up with, the phone call you're dreading, say, feels solid enough to hand to someone. Look for it the way that man did, and notice how little of it stays put long enough to hand over.
