Day 54 · Advaita · September 21, 2026

Salt all the way down.

In an old Upanishad (say "oo-pah-nih-shahd"), a father asks his son to put a lump of salt in water and return in the morning. When morning comes, the father asks him to bring back the salt. The son reaches in but can't find it. He tastes the water at the top, the middle, and the bottom. Salt, every time, everywhere in the water and nowhere his eyes can point. The eyes get an unfair amount of authority before breakfast. The awareness you're looking for isn't tucked into the quiet part of the day and missing from the noisy part; like the salt, you can't take a sip without it. This morning, taste for it three times, in the shower, in the traffic, and in the middle of whatever goes wrong first, and see whether it's ever actually missing.

This arrives by email each weekday morning. One cup a day, free.
