Day 45 · Secular · September 8, 2026

What you leave dark.

William James, writing in 1890, described attention as the mind taking possession of one thing out of several it could have picked, and he added that this means withdrawing from some things in order to deal with others effectively. The withdrawing is the half we'd rather not advertise. We like to imagine focus means choosing one thing while somehow keeping six others warm on the stove. It doesn't. Every real yes comes with a small field of no around it, and the no is doing real work. The message gets written because the headlines, the group chat, and the tab with the very important shoes all go dark for a while. They'll still be there at noon. This morning, put the phone out of reach, close every tab that isn't the task, and give one ordinary thing the whole light for ten minutes.

This arrives by email each weekday morning. One cup a day, free.
