A well-known Zen teaching device compares words to a finger pointing at the moon. The image comes from later Buddhist texts, the Lankavatara and Shurangama sutras, centuries after the historical Buddha, not from his own earliest recorded words. One version has the Buddha telling his student Ananda that if you look at the finger instead of following it to the moon, you lose both the moon and the finger. It's often assumed this line comes from Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, and he did say a version of it on screen, but he was drawing on a much older teaching, not inventing one. The point holds either way: any teaching, including this one, is a finger, not the thing it's gesturing toward. Read something worth reading this morning, then pause a beat before collecting the phrase, and notice whatever actual feeling or insight the words were pointing at.
